Dan, I purchased a new Case around 1984 or 85. The dealer had a holdover from the previous model year. He explained the new design offered a system that would retard the tractor when going down an incline, slowing, etc. According to the dealer the previous model was free wheeling. I purchased the newer model. The tractor would made a grinding noise when going down an incline or slowing.
