Does anyone know why my 446 tractor makes a grinding sound from the rear end that shakes the rear tires when traveling down a hill or when decelerating. It is worse in high range. Could it be a problem with the differential? What is the difference between hydraulic drive and hydrostatic?

I refit my 446's original Onan BF engine with a Kohler Command Pro series 25HP engine. Some machine work was involved as well as some other retrofitting for the electric clutch.

I have used Case/IH hydraulic oil in the system for a long time, but, the Ingersoll dealer informed me that there is an all organic oil sold by Ingersoll to be used in the hydraulic system,
I got some but havn't installed it yet so can't
give any feedback.

The overspeed condition you have experienced as was previously stated normal when running downhill, but, this should be mitigated by using
your brake (don't laugh yet)...there is a spring that should be connected to the flow control valve via the speed control shaft and this will proportionally scale back your speed with the brake as well as hydraulic flow at the same time and mostly eliminate the condition.

Hope that helps out. This is a really great machine and puts alot of other to shame. It is really hard to kill, I've had mine for 24 years.

I am interested in hearing more on your conversion. Can you share more info? I have a 446 I need to replace the engine on and can't decide which one to use, how to retrofit etc..Tx Joe S

Dan, I purchased a new Case around 1984 or 85. The dealer had a holdover from the previous model year. He explained the new design offered a system that would retard the tractor when going down an incline, slowing, etc. According to the dealer the previous model was free wheeling. I purchased the newer model. The tractor would made a grinding noise when going down an incline or slowing.

The recommened oil to use in the hyd system is Shell rotella 15-40 diesel engine oil. The reason is because it does not foam. A lot of information about this on Yahoo Case Garden tractor club site.

That is normal for a Case hyd. drive tractor.A hydrostatic tractor is similar to an automatic transmission driven car ,has a fluid driven transmission beteween the engine and final drive.A Case 446 tractor is an engine driving a hydraulic pump that powers an orbital motor that is located in the rear differential.Speed is controlled by a flow control valve.I know of no other garden tractors except for the Case/Ingersolls that use this system.Very bullet proof design,Im supprised more manufacturers havent used it.

Thank you. I was thinking of auctioning the tractor off because of the harshness in the rear end. The tractor has an updated Onan engine that suffers an interference problem with the hydraulic implement lift. Have you heard of any remedies for this? Can you recommend a fluid to use for the hydraulic system?

Thanks again. Dan
