Buy the ROPS. A home made one may very well work and work better but........ as someone who is experiencing first hand the court system as the defendant in a liability suit you dont want the responsibility. If you build it and it fails I would expect the liability to be on you instead of the camp. Also I would expect the camps liability insurer to not cover damages involving any non ASAE certified unit.
