I think its a matter of choice however if you leave them to loose on rough ground that thing will be all over the place, but you do need a little give otherwise if you come up again a tree or other obstacle while turning you may break something or at least slide the rear end of your unit.
I would suggest you do what works best for you by starting with them snug. At least that way when you back it up it goes where you aim it. Good luck & be safe......
