I Always put the tractor in park or neutral when I shut it off and I am accustomed to having it in neutral or park when I start it the next time. Well, my dad drove one of the tractors and left it in gear when he shut it off. Next day I hopped in the cab of that tractor, in my usual hurry, just to start it to warm it up and I let the clutch out after it started without checking to see if it was in neutral. When the tractor lurched I instantly pushed in the clutch again but not after the tractor had traveled six feet and hit the end of a corn head. A neutral switch would have prevented the tractor from taking advantage of my stupidity. This happened in 1977 and I still have it in the back on my mind when I start a vehicle with a clutch.
