They worked because they didnt have the paper ones yet. The oil in the bottom is where the dust fell as it moved with the flow of air thru the device. In the spring when the M was in the field that oil was changed when the engine oil was changed which was every other week. Same way when the picker was on. I even ran a little water in the pre-cleaner jar amazing how dirty it got every day. Same with the B when cultivating. DAD always said oil is the cheapest repair you can buy. There is no way the old oil bath were as good as the new paper filters. Same thing applied to cars you changed the oil in the cleaner when you changed the crankase oil. I guess is just told my age.
