Was raised at a John Deere dealership, in the 40's and 50's John Deere Reccomended shutting off the fuel, and draining the carburetor when you stopped an all fuel engine by letting it burn all of it out of the bowl, then they reccomended leaving the fuel shutoff turned off to keep gas or fuel from diluting the crankcase oil, and they are the ones that made the tractor!
