Rear end out?

I am new to the vintage tractor hobby, but I grew up on a farm and have been around tractors all my life. I have an opportunity to buy a Allis-Chalmers CA from an old friend of mine. He says that about 15 years ago, when he was still farming full-time, that he "tore the rear end out of it". At that point he was told it would cost more to fix than the tractor was worth, so he just parked it. Two questions for all you experts out there. First, I am planning to use this tractor as a blade/haul firewood/general purpose tractor here on the farm...is it a good general purpose tractor? Second, what would the most common definition of "tore out the rear end" be? What would be involoved in fixing it? My buddy had a bad habit of using his tractors to the limit of their abilities. I think he was haying when he ruined this tractor.
