If you go through all of Bob M's steps and then suspect it is the generator, here is a way to test the generator. Loosen the belt so the pulley can freely turn, ground the F terminal and connect the battery to the ARM terminal and ground. The generator should turn like a motor. This is an old "boneyard" trick from when cars had generators, you know, in "good"the old days.
