Obtain a large Delco starter from a diesel engine that has a third bushing. This type has the nosepiece mounted with multiple socket-head Allen screws so it may rotated to different positions for different applications. Remove the nosepiece and starter drive, and you'll still have the armature in 2 bushings, with the shaft sticking out.

How about using a V-belt around the flywheel, and using a V-pulley on the starter? You'd probably have to rig a guard so the belt couldn't get inboard of the flywheel, and wrap up. Hinge
the starter so when it starts, you can loosen the belt, and let if fall off the outside of the flywheel.
