Need some help fellows, just purchased a 16 hp,single cylinder lister diesel engine to run a 12kw generator. the engine has two 24" dia flywheels and a handcrank. you have to really get the flywheels up to speed (maybe around 200 rpm) to overcome the compression stroke at disengaging the compression release. My wife will not be able to crank the engine. on a bad day i would have trouble. i'm thinking of rigging a lever-mounted starter with a friction wheel to drive a flywheel only during starting process. if you are still with me, anyone have any ideas on the easiest/cheapest/best starter to remove the gear/bendix and add a simple rubber wheel to. or is this the wrong approach. yes i know i would have been better off with a modern engine, but i love this old design.
