The tach terminal on a Delco alternator is just a connection made to one of the 3 stator leads and brought outside the alternator, where you can connect a tach to it.

This connection can be the OEM little terminal stud, or just a wire hanging out of the alternator. Either way will work just fine.

If you have a 1-wire Delco alternator without a tach terminal, you can go to an alternator shop and get the little insulated stud and connector, and install it in the hole that already exists in the rear endbell, or just open up the alternator and connect a length of wire to one of the 3 studs on the rectifier assembly, and bring it out the back of the case. A dab of silcon rubber will keep the wire from chafing, and shorting out where it exits the alternator. A connection to any one of the 3 stator lead studs will work.
