starting problems

I have a 1952 Farmall Super C tractor. It has a 12 volt battery and generator. It would start sometimes, but the starter would just motor, or make a humming noise. So I bought a rebbuilt starter and put it on, and now just the humming noise all the time, and will not engage the flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel look OK but only see a few of the teeth through the starter mounting hole. Anybody got any logical secequences for checking out this problem?
