starting problems

I have a 1952 Farmall Super C tractor. It has a 12 volt battery and generator. It would start sometimes, but the starter would just motor, or make a humming noise. So I bought a rebbuilt starter and put it on, and now just the humming noise all the time, and will not engage the flywheel. The teeth on the flywheel look OK but only see a few of the teeth through the starter mounting hole. Anybody got any logical secequences for checking out this problem?

Your original problem was with the starter drive(bendix) not going out to mesh in the flywheel,it could have been repaired with a new starter drive. Did you check the old starter against the new one? It could mount differently, have a shorter shaft, different rotation, improper drive, drive with less teeth, bad drive, all of these will cause it not to engage the flywheel teeth.

First check voltages on system. Like as not you wasted your money if you are not getting enough volts/amps to operate it properly. Then go from there. Btw what was wrong with the first starter motor?

My starter would engage and then cut out and just hum. And the longer this went on the more humming and have not had the tractor started in over a month. Wanted to get this thing started as a New Year's resolution. Besides ther is some snow in the forcast and I might have to scrap the drive way.
