The 440 is basically a beefed up 420 (final drives, front end, differnt sheetmetal, etc) It had the option of the normal two cylinder gas engine, or the 2-53 Detroit Diesel. The 440s were intended for industrial use. Later the 435 (based on the 440) came out as an agricultural tractor, so Deere could have a small diesel tractor on the market.

According to the info I have, your 440 is from 1960, and if it is a 440ID (wheel-diesel), there were 971 made.
