I ran across a little tractor this week that I thought was a 435 diesel, but the serial number says it was a 440. The tag sn reads 457491. Anybody know the difference? It looks just like a 435.

Who knows what parts have been mixed and matched over the years. The 435 is a 440 industrial with an adjustable front end, differnet sheet metal and paint. Not a diesel 430. Getting CD's for a 440, 1957 model W chassis 420/430,435 and early 1010 shows many common parts.

Rick:

I did a little more research about this tractor. The serial number of 457491 does not match up to either a 440 or a 435. If it was 437491 (sometimes the sn's are hard to read after all these years) it would be a 435 built as a 1960 model. These SN references are from this sites serial number list. There is a site that has a lot of information about the 440 and it's serial numbers. It is weirddeere.com

Another sign that you could look for would be that the grill is quite different between the 435 and the 440. If it was a gas or all fuel it would definetly be a 440 as the 435 was only a diesel.

Bob,

Thanks for the reference to my weirddeere website. The serial number he posted is correct for a 440.

440s serial started at #440001 and went to #461929. His number 457491 fits right in there during the 1960 model year.

The 440 is basically a beefed up 420 (final drives, front end, differnt sheetmetal, etc) It had the option of the normal two cylinder gas engine, or the 2-53 Detroit Diesel. The 440s were intended for industrial use. Later the 435 (based on the 440) came out as an agricultural tractor, so Deere could have a small diesel tractor on the market.

According to the info I have, your 440 is from 1960, and if it is a 440ID (wheel-diesel), there were 971 made.

I have more information at my website:
www.weirddeere.com

Good luck!
Brandon

The 440 was the industrial version of the 430, it had a beefier front end to handle a loader. In the 60's they were only available from an industrial dealership, and if our dealership sold one in central Georgia, we had to purchase it from the industrial dealership and truck it in from south Ga. The ag dealers at that time were not allowed to order one from the factory direct. Gene Davis

Rick:

I have a 435 and it is my understanding that the 435 was derived from the 440. The main difference is that the 440 is a industrial tractor and I think that they had a gas engine available whereas the 435 is strictly diesel. (2-53 Detroit)
