the voltage regulator has been known to do this in many vehicles. it is a piece usually bolted to the inner fender with 5 or so wires going to it. it's hard to explain its looks, but if you take it off most parts stores can test them for free. i've had this on my 88 taurus and it's an easy fix to a pain of a problem
