dont forget that part of the investment is the fun of the mechanical work, the buying and transporting experience and the knowledge gained in researching your fix-up needs and parts. I think that's a lot of what this is about in addition to having the hardware. That and the pride of having something old that you can keep running (or got running to begin with). I recently purchased a W9 "parts" tractor to go along with a W9 running tractor I bought. I picked them up at the same time. When I picked it up the parts tractor was 100% complete. When I got it home I found I was as interested in getting the old girl running again as I was working on the one that ran, perhaps more so. Pride in being able to bring 'em back.
