Hi Guys!

Let’s face it. It is just a toy and that’s all it is.

I moved up here in the hills because I like being in the trees. Now, no one ever told me that when it snows, you must use a multiplier of 8 as compared to the flat land when it comes to snowfall amounts.

Okay, so I think, “Well, I’ll just buy an old tractor, throw a loader on it and clear my driveways as required.” Silly thought; as I’m adding up the total cost now. :>)

Old tractor $1850.00
Hauling Fee 200.00
Wide Front 813.00
Used Loader 1000.00
Tire Chains 247.00

So, here I sit with a fifty-year-old tractor mounted with a forty-year-old loader costing me over four grand so I can go out and play in the snow.

Aw, but she is one sweet old gal, and the sound of that old engine is absolutely priceless.

Allan

Alan:
dont forget that part of the investment is the fun of the mechanical work, the buying and transporting experience and the knowledge gained in researching your fix-up needs and parts. I think that's a lot of what this is about in addition to having the hardware. That and the pride of having something old that you can keep running (or got running to begin with). I recently purchased a W9 "parts" tractor to go along with a W9 running tractor I bought. I picked them up at the same time. When I picked it up the parts tractor was 100% complete. When I got it home I found I was as interested in getting the old girl running again as I was working on the one that ran, perhaps more so. Pride in being able to bring 'em back.

My lovely(lights, half the guages, TA, and brakes, don't work) 706 is at the welders getting the finishing touches on the hydraulic bucket addition to the mismatched IH 2000/2001 loader today. Like you I moved to the country and had to have this "big" tractor to move snow. The cost can never be justified but the satisfaction of rebuilding this beast as I can is prieless. I am sure you are haveing some of the same good/bad experiences I am. Be sure and enjoy them. There are lots of old things you can be working on, like cars. But none of them will help you move dirt around the yard.

You could of saved nearly a grand by deleting the wide front, never had a loader on a wide front tractor, it can be done, just go slow and learn as it comes. John in Nebraska

A lot of you will argue, but I took the loader off my Olie 77 narrow front after the first time I used my MF 245 with loader. There's a great stability difference.

Hi John,

Bless your 'ole heart and thanks for jumping in here; but, my neighbor was killed doin' just that...

So, I gotta follow my head and do the wide thing; especially up here in these hills.

Besides, I have to make sure that I spend all my kid's inheritance while I still can. :>)

But you all miss the great sociological impact you can be making. Being a boomer I was blessed to have grandparents, aunts and uncles who stilled farmed/ranched. Even though I was a city kid I cherish those visits. Something about riding on the tractors with my relatives taught ne a little bit about patience, planning, work ethic, appreciation of nature, etc.
To me there is something about running equipment that shows you how you just can't hurry through every thing.
So I hope you have kids, grandkids, great grandkids that you can take with you and share this experience. Seeing the snow cleared, the grass mowed, dirt piled, field plowed or hay baled, will imprint on them.
Sorry to ramble, the soap box is starting to wobble.

It's all about the toys. I actually have my wife believing that when I pass to that great hay field in the sky, that all those old toys will be worth more than what I paid.

Yes but, for 4 grand, you have something that will pretty much last forever. You could have spent twice that much on a new glorified lawnmower, and it would be junk in just a few years.

Then add the cost of the "eventual" restoration, the new shed to keep it in, the 2367 impliments, the "special" tools needed to properly maintain it, a trailer to haul it on, a truck to pull that trailer, The new wife, becouse the old one thought you were nuts and left, the..... well, you get the picture. Have fun, and happy tractoring, John
