There is a lever on the underside of the transmision. When you move this lever to disconect position. It disconects the PTO shaft from the drive. That way you are not turning the gears inside the PTO unit when not needed.
There is a planet gear and sun gear that run all the time in the PTO unit. Disconecting this saves wear and tear on these parts. At least I think they do. I know some thing is turning in there at all times
