Two things cause that. warn out rings, gouges, deep scratches, in the ram cylinder, or a leaking check valve in the control valve body. I would guess yours is the first. You may as well go ahead an remove the lift cover and take the ram apart, yor will see it just under the cover, about 4in. in diameter, fairly simple, much like the old Harry Ferguson system from the 1930s. I don't remember a filter, but if it is there you will find it.
