Rick, My uncle was having troubles with his IH 504 last year. I did all the things you did. Would run great for awhile and then backfire and die. Turned out to be the the timing was way off. About 25 degrees off. Timed it with a lite and all the troubles were gone. Also check and make sure nothing is blocking the gas tank inside and the gas cap vent hole is open. Had those troubles too.
