I'M HAVING BIG TROUBLE WITH MY IH 444 TRACTOR WANTING TO DIE ON ME AFTER IT HEATS UP AND GETS UNDER A LOAD. IT WAS RUNNING JUST FINE AND THEN ONE DAY..... .PLAAA! I'VE REPLACED THE POINTS AND CONDENSER AND ROTOR CAP, CLEANED OUT THE CARB. NOTHING, ADDED AN INLINE FUEL FILTER, REPLACED THE COIL, THEN REGAPPED THE POINTS. BUT IT JUST KEEPS GETTING WORSE IT ALSO WANTS TO BACK FIRE WHEN I TRY TO RESTART IT BUT IT WILL NOT RESTART UNTIL IT COOLS OFF COMPLETELY. ANY SUGGESTIONS? ONE STRANGE THING IS THAT I CAN HOLD ONTO THE COIL TO DISTRIBUTOR CAP WIRE WHILE IT IS RUNNING. EVERYONE SEEMS TO THINK I SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO THAT WITHOUT GETTING ZAPPED. I'VE LOOKED AT ALL THE WIRES AND CAN'T FIND ANY SHORTS OR BREAKS. I'VE ALSO RUN A WIRE STRAIGHT FROM THE BATTERY TO THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THE COIL THAT DIDN'T HELP OR CHANGE ANYTHING EITHER. I'VE CHECKED FOR MOISTURE AND CRACKS IN THE CAP. IT WILL USUALLY RUN A GOOD STEADY HOUR BEFORE IT WANTS TO DIE. I'VE BEEN MESSING WITH THIS THING FOR WEEKS AND CAN'T TROUBLE SHOOT IT. I'M PRETTY SURE THAT I HAVE GOOD FUEL PRESSURE I'VE CHECKED THAT THE NEEDLE VALVE OPENS AND CLOSES AT INSTALLED POSITION, THE NEW FUEL FILTER IS CLEAR SO I CAN SEE THAT IT MADE IT TO WITHIN 3" OF THE CARB. THE TRACTOR HAS AN ELECTRIC FUEL PUMP AND IT'S STILL PUMPING GOOD.

Also check your distributor shaft for wear, my M had worn bushings and I had similar problems.

I had the same problem on a 1972 Ford pickup. It about drove me nuts. It finally failed enough to allow me to find that the problem was the wire which goes from the coil to the points was broken inside of the insulation.

The fitting in the carb on some IH carbs have a screen on the fitting which sets inside the carb. I worked aon a 424 which had the same problem. This screen was plugged. The lucky thing was I found the screen by accident when this fitting looked loose and I removed it to put on some teflon tape to thighten it up.

Just a thought but after checking the timing and a compression check, look to see if the tractor might be vapor locking. Good luck

Spray some wd40 in the dist cap and replace it. Then see what happens. Condensate is sometimes hard to see along with cracks and carbon deposits.

Have seen this several times..

I'd vote for a burned valve or a timing problem.

Rick, My uncle was having troubles with his IH 504 last year. I did all the things you did. Would run great for awhile and then backfire and die. Turned out to be the the timing was way off. About 25 degrees off. Timed it with a lite and all the troubles were gone. Also check and make sure nothing is blocking the gas tank inside and the gas cap vent hole is open. Had those troubles too. Hope this helps. Al

I had a D17 allis that did this same thing one time, about drove me crazy. Try replacing the little barrel under the distributer cap. That solved my problem.

Hi Rick,

Wow! A headache, huh?

That backfire when you try to restart is the key. It is something electrical.

Could be water in the fuel too (but you say the fuel is good and that it runs for an hour, so this rules this out).

The symptoms point directly at the coil, but you say you've already replaced it....next time it does it, take a ordinary jumper wire and replace that coil wire (it is not carbon wire is it?). See if this helps.

The problem has got to be something in this area: coil, coil wire, points, condenser, rotor, cap, distributor.

Also, when it won't start check the color of the spark at the coil tower...should be a nice blue snap. If the spark is red (weak) then the problem lies with either the coil or the consenser.

Tryin' to help,

Allan
