Hi Rick, Wow! A headache, huh? That backfire when you try to restart is the key. It is something electrical. Could be water in the fuel too (but you say the fuel is good and that it runs for an hour, so this rules this out). The symptoms point directly at the coil, but you say you've already replaced it....next time it does it, take a ordinary jumper wire and replace that coil wire (it is not carbon wire is it?). See if this helps. The problem has got to be something in this area: coil, coil wire, points, condenser, rotor, cap, distributor. Also, when it won't start check the color of the spark at the coil tower...should be a nice blue snap. If the spark is red (weak) then the problem lies with either the coil or the consenser.
