There are motion detectors available that operate in the 5- 12 volt DC range. They are used to trip security system alarm panels. You might need a small relay to operate the light when tripped by the motion detector. This relay would probably have to have a time delay "pulse extender" built in, as generally these security products only generate a quick single pulse when tripped, and when this occurs, the relay for the 12 Volt light needs to latch "on" for the length of time you want the light to remain on. Using this method eliminates the need for an invertor. Check out the link below to view some available low-voltage security equipment. I don't think they sell to private individuals, only businesses, but if you find a product you could use, a local security businees could probably get it for you, from this or another source. A local security specialist could advise you how to interface a low-voltage passive infrared detector with your 12 Volt floodlight.
