John is certainly correct in saying that invertors draw amperage when there is no load.

I purchased a Vector 700/1400 surge watt unit from Tractor Supply Company. It has a no load draw of .8 amp, i.e. 8/10ths amp. The newer electronic ones have hardly any no load draw.

I think that an invertor would be ideal.

I would also suggest that you wire an auto horn into the circuit, so that it honks when the light comes on. You might not hear it, but the person standing below it doesn't know that. A horn, horn relay, and a turn signal flasher should do the trick.

Take it one step further, and during the summer time use a spray tank of permanent dye with spray nozzles aimed in several directions around the battery bank, controller, etc. Trigger it by a motion detector with a 12 volt sprayer boom solenoid in the supply hose. Perhaps you'd rather use a quick dry laquer to spray on their auto.
Easy marking for the sheriff's officers to find.
