Well there is live hydralics and live PTO
you want both. in the older stuff (2N and 9N) if you were driving an implement say a brushhog, as long as the blades were turning the wheels would drive whether the clutch was engauged or not this could get you in trouble. in the 50's most tractors went to a 'two stage clutch where you could disengauge drive to wheels and continue to run implement Some hydralic pumps would not drive if pto was disengauged on the older stuff

Trust me you want both live hydralics and live pto
