I'm considering the purchase of a utility type tractor, everyone tells me I need live power, what exactly does that mean?

Thanks

Live Power...
Well there is live hydralics and live PTO
you want both. in the older stuff (2N and 9N) if you were driving an implement say a brushhog, as long as the blades were turning the wheels would drive whether the clutch was engauged or not this could get you in trouble. in the 50's most tractors went to a 'two stage clutch where you could disengauge drive to wheels and continue to run implement Some hydralic pumps would not drive if pto was disengauged on the older stuff

Trust me you want both live hydralics and live pto

on older tractors, the hydraulic pump is in the back of the transmission area. if you push in on the motor clutch, you stop moving, and the pto stops turning, and the hydraulics stop working. live hydraulics have the pump forward of the motor clutch so you have hydraulic power anytime the motro is running. dont care if it is in gear, or moving, or what.

live or independent lets you operate the pto independently from the the forward or reverse motion of the tractor.

It also means that the hydraulics will operate anytime the engine is running.

The big advantage is that you can start the machine before the foward motion of the tractor, allowing the engine horsepower to start the machine first, and then the tractor, using H.P. more efficiently.
