Father knows best!

After reading all the "Murphy's Law" post's, I can't help but wonder how many times my father told me how to avoid lifes "pitfalls", yet I had to learn them all on my own. He used to tell me how a wise man would learn from his mistakes, but that was the hard way, when it's even wiser to learn from someone elses mistakes.
OK. Sounds simple enough. All you have to do is listen to dear old dad.
What are the biggest lessons you learned from your father? What is the most important thing you ever learned from SOMEONE ELSES mistake?
I'll start this one off.
The single most important thing I ever learned from dad, was how to respect and love my wife the way he did my mother. No contest.
The biggest lesson I ever learned from someone elses mistake came when I watched a friend get electrocuted, when he assumed the power was off to a breaker panel, just becouse he turned it off the day before.
