It is normal for the timing mark to move away from the pointer as the rpm increases. It is caused by the centrifugal advance weights in the distributor. As the engine rpm increases, the engine must fire the spark plug sooner in order to complete combustion on the power stroke and maintain engine power. The timing mark and the pointer will only match up at a specified engine rpm, normally idle. You need to make sure that your engine is running at that specified rpm before you use your timing light or your timing will be off.
