Timing issue on Farmall H

I recently completed an restore on a 43 H. When I check the timing at idle needle lines up perfectly with the timing mark. As I increase the throttle the distance between the pointer and the timing mark also increase. At full throttle the timing appears to be way off. I do not experience this on my green ones. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

That is normal if you have a battery ignition distributor. It is caused by the centrifugal advance weights in the distributor. The timing marks on those early tractors are usually for when the piston is at top-dead-center, or zero advance. That is where the impulse coupling on a magneto is supposed to trip, or in your case when the points open in the battery ignition distributor when the enigne is not running or cranking slow by hand. When the enigne runs and speeds up the spark is automaticaly advanced to normal running timing. Running timing is fixed advance with a magneto, varialbe with a distributor.

It is normal for the timing mark to move away from the pointer as the rpm increases. It is caused by the centrifugal advance weights in the distributor. As the engine rpm increases, the engine must fire the spark plug sooner in order to complete combustion on the power stroke and maintain engine power. The timing mark and the pointer will only match up at a specified engine rpm, normally idle. You need to make sure that your engine is running at that specified rpm before you use your timing light or your timing will be off.

The original owners manuel says to loosen the Magneto and to push the top of as far back against the block as you can, and crank it slowly until the pointer aligns with the notch on pulley, then slowly pull magneto toward you until it clicks and then re-tighten bolts. It always worked for me down thru the years.

Does the tractor sound ok? It is normal for that to happen. You really can't use a timing light(if you are using one) to adjust the timing. I had a M engine put together and I timed it with a light and it ran ok,but sounded like it was under labor even with it just sitting there at low speads. I go by sound to make adjustments. If you have something too hook up to the belt pulley that works great. Or a dyno if you can find one. You can just stand there and turn the mag/Dist a little untill it sounds just right. I hope this helps. Maybe someone out here can give a more scientific way on why it don't work with a timing light or why the markings get farther away the faster it runs.

Jason, you had the problem you experienced because those timing marks are indicatig ZERO advance, those are NOT marks for the running timing. Farmers never had timing lights years ago. The timing marks should line up when the impulse on the magneto trips, or the points in the battery igntion distributor open when turning the engine slowly by hand.

Jake you worded it better than I could, if he will do as we advised him the timing will be as near perfect as can be done.
