Ross check out the article section on the left. I use a new 12V coil with an internal resistor which is neater and easier to hookup. With an alternator every thing will be a negative ground including the battery. Check out the "upgrading the Oliver 55 elecrical system, uses an electronic upgrade to the distributor. Good luck
