Hello,
I'm 23 and new to tractors and restoration. However I'm a machinist so I'm not totally new to mechanical things. I'm converting my tractor from 6 volt to 12 volt. A shop is changing over the starter and the generator to a 12 volt alternator. What else do I need to change? I've got the old parts and service manuals, but thing's are kind of vague on electrical stuff. It's a 1952 DC. Any help would be appreciated.

Save some money dont change the starter, as others have stated it will work fine

Also a 52 DC should be a positve ground system. I don't think anything changes if you were to convert it.. Why are you changing this to 12 volts? 6 volts should be more than enough to turn that over.

Ross check out the article section on the left. I use a new 12V coil with an internal resistor which is neater and easier to hookup. With an alternator every thing will be a negative ground including the battery. Check out the "upgrading the Oliver 55 elecrical system, uses an electronic upgrade to the distributor. Good luck

Ross - Welcome to world of old tractor restoration! Your machinist skills will come in handy I can guarantee!!

Only things you need to change for a conversion is to swap all the light bulbs for 12 volt bulbs (if your tractor has lights). And if you have coil and distributor (not magneto) ignition you need to add a ballast resistor in series with the coil primary, or else replace the coil with an internally ballasted "12 volt" coil.

Incidentally you really didn't need to do anything to you 6 volt starter for it to work on 12 volts. It will work fine and enjoy a long life so long as you don't abuse it.
