I wasn't remembering exactly right. Let me clarify: I think I remember the filter screen being a permanent item inside the tank. The fuel shutoff valve extends its pipe just inside the screen. I don't think the screen is meant to be replaced. However, mine was so crudded up that I used a long handled screwdriver to destory the screen and pull it out of the tank. Then I replaced the fuel shutoff valve. Works great now.
