The best power for a sawmill is electric. A 75HP electric motor will power a sawmill better than a 125 HP Diesel. An old Detroit 2 cycle Diesel has twice the power impulses of a 4 cycle Diesel with the same number of cylinders at a given crankshaft speed and thus is smoother for belt operation. But I do understand using whatever you can find at the "right" price. Look for 75 to 85 HP- you will like that extra power.
