I have used a driving light relay from Radio Shack or from an automotive parts house instead of the diode. The alternator energizing wire is used as the load and the wire which they say goes to the switch goes to the ignition. I do this if I think somebody other than me will ever have to look for a problem. An in line diode, especially if it is covered with heat shrink, would be a hard problem to find if it failed.
