The air tank on the trailer is not supposed to empty when you shut off the valve in the truck. It will over time because a system which absolutely does not leak is probably nonexistent. When the air is shut off to the trailer, the service brakes will apply until the air leaks out and then they will release. The maxi's will set and stay locked until the air from the truck is again applied, but if the trailer has not had time to leak down, the tank will already be full. Leaking off should take a minimum of maybe a half hour or so to days or weeks. I don't remember DOT rules for how long they require it to be able to hold. The maxi's and the service brakes both are in the same unit and apply through the same rod to the same brakes.
