Depending on your level of mechanical knowledge,it can be a DIY job. You will have to set the pinion depth, set the backlash, and set the preload on the bearings. If you are not comfortable with doing this, nor have the proper tools, and equipment, you would be better off having it professionally done. While you are in the rear, figure on replacing all the bearings, and seals, and checking and/or replacing the axle bearings.(all that worn off steel went someplace) If the rear is not properly set up, its life expectancy will be shortened, not to mention the constant ringing and whining and clunking associated with it. Richmond Gear used to sell a complete kit to rebuild the rear. It had ring and pinion, bearings, necessary shims, seals, and instructions.
