Hi Dave, I own similar to that 3 pt backhoe you find expensive. No argument there, mine was used and it came with long rails to attach to the bottom of the tractor, much better than 3 pt. I bought it to dig a 1/2 mile trench down a mountain for my electric installation. I've also rented a mini excavator when I couldn't get my compact tractor with hoe in to a tiny construction site. The excavator was VERY tippy on uneven or sloped ground compared to a tractor. But fit where my tractor didn't and the flexibility (much greater than my hoe) of the hoe saved a lot of shovel time. Tracked, of course, is a lot slower to move the machine any distance. What's best for you, independent of cost, will depend on what you want to do. I don't usually have my hoe on my tractor and have absolutely no interest in owning a mini excavator. Hoes are great, but only when you want to dig. My hoe says Ford on it, 7' digging depth, and I had to fabricate the mounts for a non-Ford tractor. Paid $1500 to a dealer for it a few years ago. I notice somebody here continuously advertising they're looking for a used one. Hard to find but great to have available and no extra maintenance of another tractor, especially a tracked one.
