I wouldn't change over to 12-volt and alternator if I were you. I have had several 6-volt tractors including a Ford 800, Ford 9N and a John Deere 420 and they start and run just fine even in North Country winters if all the components are in good shape and you use the right size battery cables. Of course, I have had to sock the generators and regulators to them because it seems that when they failed the previous owner never fixed them. You can get starters and generators rebuilt pretty reasonable, and keeping it original 6-volt helps the collectability while still running OK. Anyway, just my $0.02 for whatever it is worth, good luck with whatever you decide to do.
