advise on buying a used small skid loader

i am looking to buy a small skid loader..something in the 500 to 1000 lb lift class. Looking at models like Gehl 2500, 3000 or the case 1816B or theJLG LJ500 series. I need a very compact machine. I will be buying an older model, say early to late 80s. Wont be an every day user either, just to move and level dirt on my tree farm after tree is dug. Since im looking for older model anything in particular to watch out for would be appreciated.
