The 2/3 rule works great for bumper pulls and most GN/5'er for pick-up type vechiles. From the center of hitch pin to the center of axle(s) is 2/3 of the length. This works well upto tri-axles with a beaver tail and unlimted axles on a flatdeck.

A semi trailer is loaded different on the tractor axles so a different rule applys. A semi trailer will enlighten your engineering thinking tho, so there good to look at for structual design ideas.

The 2/3 rule also apply's to:
boats beam 1/3 in width to it's length
tanks 1/3 diameter to height
buildings minmium base is 1/3 of it's height

A cross is 1/3 in width of the total length of the cross placed at 2/3 of the length from the bottom

This comes from the Holy Bible thats been used for thousands of years for construction of buildings.

The most effective engineered angle is 30 degrees for structual strength. 30 degrees is 1/3 of a 90 degree angle. Amazing huh!

Mass does not make up for egineered depth. If design calls for 12" "I" beam you can not use a 6x4x1/4" square tube , etc:
