hotter plugs

I'm having trouble with spark plugs fouling on a IH 2500. It calls for D18Y plugs but the counter man at the local NAPA said they've had good results with hotter plugs. Say's the gas doesn't ignite as good as original spec's from the early 70's called for. I don't find that hard to believe. Anyone have an opinion on the hotter plug or are there any additives that are worth a try.
