JD 45 combine engines

Can anyone tell me how to find out what engine is in a John deere 45 combine by looking at the machine itself or by the engine. I heard that they came with three diferent size engines (as far as cubic inches) and I would like to know what size engine is in a certain combine that I am intersted in purchasing. Can you tell by serial numbers, age of the unit, or will I have to crawl up and check the motor itself. Any help would be greatly apreciated.
