Rich, I think I know what you are missing. I have had three rotary cutters, different brands but all the blades mounted the same. Look at the top of the deck from above. On one side, not far from the gear box, you may find a port that can be opened by removing a bolt or two. This will give you access to nut that you will need to remove if you need to replace the blades. You will need to rotate the PTO shaft to get the nut(s) to line up with the hole. However, I agree that you don't need to remove to sharpen. Much easier to do in place if you can lift it and secure it safely.
