I'm not that familiar with the particular type of engine your talking about but the problem sounds familiar. It sounds like the contacts inside the starter solenoid are corroded/burnt. On starters with the solenoid mounted on the side the contacts are actually a round disc inside the back of the solenoid. When you apply power and the bendix engages, it closes the contacts and sends power to the starter motor. Many times like you said it won't work because it will close on a corroded/burnt place, but the shock of the bendix kicking out,( which is caused by the start switch and is independent of the actual starter contacts) will cause the contacts to move slightly, so the next time they make and it starts.
It can also be a bad winding in the starter. If the bad winding ends up in the wrong(or right) place, then it won't complete the circuit through the start motor and it won't start. Same applies though, if it's close to being in the right place, then the shock of the bendix engaging can cause it to move just enough to work.
Whichever problem is present, a good starter repair shop should be able to take care of the problem for you.
