diesel verses gasoline

Would like opinions on diesel engines verses gasoline engines for pulling! I am planning on pulling some this year and was wondering what is a better engine. Have always thought the diesels were good engines when it came to pulling heavy loads, but some opinions I have got were favoring gasoline. I don't plan on modifying the engine, just leaving it stock.If gasoline is better for pulling, why did they make diesel engines?
