A 100HP rated diesel at 1800 rpm has the exact same amount of torque as a 100HP rated gasoline engine at 1800 rpm. Now if overloaded and lugged both engines down to 1500rpm we are losing HP or the amount of work we can do in 1 hour. The diesel may gain 15% more torque (torque rise)when running at max volumetric efficiency ( rpm where peak torque occurs). If the lugged down gasoline engine may have a 10% torque rise, it will do less work per hour but have the same rated HP diesel with the 15% rise.
