The synthetic oil does not breakdown as quickly at high temperatures compared to regular oil. Thus, less oil contaminates means greater oil life.
The old 10W-40 was full of polymers. The polymers would coil up when cold & uncoil when hot. This is how & why a multi-weight oil stays thicker at hot temperatures. One problem, the polymers breakdown at high temperatures creating contaminates. New car manufactures state NO 10W-40 oil. To fight this even more, notice the 5W-20 oil for sale? Thats right, less 'nasty' polymers in the oil. Gee, the old timers were pretty smart using straight weight oil in their engines!
