I think they called these things Work Bulls. If they are working right, with the peddle in the center and up at slow idle it should go in gear with out scraping. The reverser is in front of the transmission, and reverses the whole trans. This gives forward and reverse in each gear, by moving the foot peddle down and to the left or right. To use the PTO for stationary work you put the trans lever in netural and lock the peddle down and to the right. If you push the peddle to the left the trans. reverses, the hydraulic pump reverses and the PTO reverses. The pump is a piston pump and will work in reverse, but it is rough on PTO drive shafts and what ever you are running if you if you push the peddle to the left while under load. The same thing happens, if you have a bush hog type chopper on the tractor, when you start to back up the PTO reverses. This causes alot of noise and flying parts. I think a over running clutch will help this problem.
